With “Persuasive”, new TDE signing Doechii delivers one of the catchiest singles of the year…
Last year, Tampa native Doechii blew up on TikTok with her unbelievably propulsive single, “Yucky Blucky Fruitcake”, which displayed some genuinely head-whipping rapping, combined with impeccable storytelling and strong musical competence. This year, it came out that she is one of the newest signings to TDE and her stock only seems to be continuing to rise. In March of 2022, she returned with a new single to commemorate the announcement, “Persuasive”. While it may lack the excitement and audacious nature of “Yucky Blucky Fruitcake” (most songs can’t match the energy of that one), it does show a stronger, more refined ability as a songwriter and an improved ear for pop music.
A thespian, Doechii started out performing in school, while also grinding as a vlogger on the internet before beginning to work on her music. In a very short time, she’s amassed features with Isaiah Rashad, Missy Elliot, and David Guetta, to name a few. Her newest single, “Persuasive”, is pulsating and undeniable, featuring an infectious hook (“She’s so persuasive, that marijuana/ She’s so flirtatious, how does it feel to be you?) and an understated and subtle first verse. Doechii is an expert at letting the beat build and ratcheting up musical tension here; she doesn’t really start “rapping” until nearly 90 seconds into the song, but once the second verse rolls around, she takes off, showing off blisteringly brilliant and seductive flows.
The ad-libs are brilliant and add an extra element to the song and the production feels almost atmospheric, kind of like you’re floating up to space and getting higher up as the song goes on. It’s really impressive work, as a whole. Doechii raps with this breathy, sexy voice, filled with extreme confidence and deservedly so. She’s a burgeoning superstar with a long and illustrious career to come. With “Persuasive”, she cements herself as one of the most exciting and interesting young artists to keep an eye on.
