ARTISTS TO WATCH

Dro Newton is a perfect tape. At 7 tracks, each song clocks in under 3 minutes, with Kush Newton expertly handling the production. An early standout, “When I Land” finds Dro spazzin’ out over shimmering synths, weaving in and out between intricate hi-hat patterns. It is a perfect encapsulation of Dro and Newton’s chemistry and the instantly replay-able track features an excellent chopped and screwed outro that makes you feel like you’re floating.

If we find Kush playing the role of Dr. Frankenstein, that would make Dro come alive as Frankenstein’s monster — and what a sight to behold. It’s a mix of magic, mad science, and kinship.  The ride continues, and on “Been Doin This S**t” , we find Dro at his peak, absolutely bodying some spacey sounds courtesy of Sir Kush. It’s a blend and marriage of sound comparable to Carti over Pi’erre, or Future over Metro. It’s daring, it’s different, and it’s dictating — it’s now, it’s the future. The tape comes to a quick conclusion and it leaves me hungry for more.

The tape is a snapshot of the potential these two up and comers have and if DRO NEWTON is any indication of where these guys are going, these are two craftsman on the brink of something special. Hopefully this is just the beginning.
