RECESS

“This how it’s s’posed to be. I know that there is more for me.”

9henom and the rest of The Playground family presented a gift to all the supporters on Christmas Day.

The 9 track project features some familiar faces to The Playground, with a vast array of styles and sounds, allowing for repeat listens past the holiday season.

The opening track “NOWADAYS” featuring Ok Tav & Armauni sucks you into the world of The Playground off rip. The intro portion of the beat sounds like something out of a 90s film like Darren Aronofsky’s “Pi”. Then it flips into a faster paced spaced out beat featuring the sample of the track Wiz and Curren$y used on “Car Service”. Armauni added some grit to the track with his verse. Really dig the vocals by 9henom, especially on the hook.

“‘04 CLUB ANTHEM” featuring Notsew is very nostalgic. The beat and the way 9henom’s vocals on the hook and verse have that get on the dance floor vibe. The way Notsew goes into his verse off of 9henom’s was a dope element of the track. Notsew is one of the most underrated rappers in the scene for sure. Definitely need some visuals for this joint. On “HIGH LIFE” 9henom taps into some Alt RnB vibes featuring Tinzo & 7Spellz. I could see this track being played at an intimate jazz club style setting, on some open mic shit. The wonky but still funky beat is a vibe for sure. The vocals from Tinzo added to the duet esthetic of the song.

“ROLIE POLIE OLIE '' sees 9henom joining forces with 2021 producer of the year Kushh Newton to bring some late 2000’s love song vibes. The sample on the beat is really dope, and 9henom kills it with that earworm hook. So far I am really digging the different array of styles on this project. “Sure Thing” is a favorite of mine. The vocals 9henom starts the track off with a vocal style that is really not being done nowadays, but he pulled it off flawlessly without coming off as corny. The production has a bit of a Kanye West “Graduation’ vibe to it. I feel it's 9henom’s relatability that really makes his songs connect with the listener. Homie is giving Miguel a run for his money.

“OFF THE PORCH” has a bit of a throwback Bobby V and Timbaland vibe to it. Featuring regular players like Drogotdoe, Zizi Lakeboy, and OK Tav, this is one of my standout tracks on the project. Dro doesn't usually go over production like this, but his deeper voice brought a different element to the song. The hook by 9henom is one of my favorites on the project. A standout track for sure. The busy experimental production on “EVERGREEN” was a nice change of pace at this point in the project. You already know 9henom came correct with the bars especially with spitters like Deleteeglitch, Drogotdoe, and OK Tav. Dro brought more of his traditional style on this track, a big contrast from the previous joint. Glitch did his thing like always, I love when he adds in those food references. Another great hook provided by 9henom.

“BLIZZY FREESTYLE” slows things down a bit. I really dig 9henom’s vocals at about the mid way point of his verse. When he says “Be Careful” is probably my favorite part of the track, which continues on in each following verse. Drogotdoe does his thing yet again, switching up his style and flow to add his take on the track. OK Tav did his thing on this joint as well, meshing different vocal tones on his verse.  The project ends on a banger with “Outta Sight”. 9henom really brought it with the bars on this one. The Speed Racer references throughout the song made it more memorable, especially since I am a big fan of the character. The slowed down vibe at the end of the track was a nice contrast from its previous fast paced nature.

A very solid compilation project from The Playground family to end out 2021.
