T.M.O.O.N.

“I don’t mind the eyelids, I could give some guidance.”

by Mike Mekus

1/26/2022

With her new 2022 single, “T.M.O.O.N.”, Tampa native TaylorMoon resoundingly announces her potential for rap superstardom…

23-year-old Tampa native TaylorMoon has only released five songs since the end of 2019, three of those coming in the last six months. Her first single available on streaming services, “Pick It Up”, is raw but features loads to like out of a debut song. “Wig On”, her only single from 2020, is blisteringly fun and filled with the theatrics of a couple of Doja Cat’s finer songs (Moon grew up a thespian from Blake High School, so the expressiveness and theatricality she brings to her rapping should come as no surprise at all). Moon was quiet for much of 2021, until the back half, where she released the effortlessly subtle “Girl Mad” and then the solid “Get U Right”. She comes roaring into 2022 with her strongest and most impressive song thus far, “T.M.O.O.N.”.

Produced and engineered quite effectively by Tampa rapper/producer Notsew (who recently released a compilation album featuring some of the finest artists in Tampa,  including TaylorMoon twice), Moon is presented a beat that’s a perfect canvas for her to showcase her dexterous rap capabilities. The chorus is simple but insanely catchy (“You bitches not fucking with me and that’s tea, you wasting my time as we talkin’ about some M’s/Intuition high like a spy, 007, chakras all aligned till the motherfucking end”).

Moon raps with propulsive energy here, the most pointed and focused she’s ever sounded, brimming with deserved bravado as she announces her arrival. She raps as if she knows she’s the next one up; I would be hard pressed to find anybody who could listen to her growth as an artist over the last two years and hear how assured she sounds here and disagree. Hopefully her debut album drops soon (hopefully she features more of her singing voice, too, because she constantly sang in her earlier singles and is certainly as good of a singer as she is rapper) and the rest of the world can be equally as blown away.
